The Hawker Tempest was a British fighter aircraft primarily used by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in the Second World War. The Tempest was an improved derivative of the Hawker Typhoon, the type originally being known as the Typhoon II, which was intended to address the Typhoon's unexpected fall-off of performance at high altitude by replacing its wing with a thinner laminar flow design. Having diverged considerably from the Typhoon, it was chosen to rename the aircraft Tempest. The Tempest emerged as one of the most powerful fighters of the World War II and was the fastest propeller-driven aircraft of the war at low altitude.

The HAWKER TEMPEST is scaled at 2.35 inches to the foot. The plans show an all built-up structure drawn full size and includes the installation of flaps and retracts. The retracts shown are available from Hank Likes, although other similar retracts may also be used. Check out our Giant Scale Retracts. Full size templates are also shown for all ribs, formers and other various parts. If you would like to purchase a wood kit see KIT CUTTER'S on selection bar at the top of each page. The model may be built as a MK V or a MK VI by making the additions of the wing leading edge radiators. OR.. The model may also be converted to a MK II by using the fiberglass cowl from our 90 inch Sea Fury. All three versions are shown on the plans. See our scale Struts and Tailwheel elsewhere.Accessory parts available are fiberglass cowls, clear plastic canopy, aluminum spinner (for Mk V or Mk VIwith machined aluminum back plate and vacuum-formed dummy exhaust stacks and elevator shrouds. See our Struts and Tailwheel elsewhere in our Giant Scale Retracts section.Primary construction is light plywood, balsa and spruce using conventional “Tried and True” materials and building techniques. All structures (with the exception of the rudder) are built-up and are either sheeted with 1/8" or 3/32" balsa. The rudder is fabric covered as per the prototype. No foam is used what-so-ever. A four to six channel radio is required. The Tempest uses 5.50 diameter wheels and a 1/5 scale WW II pilot figure.
